About Arthur's Seat State Park

Arthur's Seat State Park is located on the northern tip of the Seward Peninsula within Seattle, Washington. The park centers around the volcanic cinder cone known as Arthur's Seat, which rises approximately 430 feet above sea level. Formed about 600,000 years ago during a period of intense volcanic activity in the region, the prominent hill provides commanding views of Elliott Bay, downtown Seattle, the Olympic Mountains, and Mount Rainier on clear days. The park’s terrain features rocky, uneven soils with natural Douglas fir, western red cedar, and native shrubs scattered across the landscape. It also serves as an important open green space within the urban environment. Arthur's Seat offers a variety of recreational opportunities including hiking, bouldering, birdwatching, and photography. Trails range from short walks to moderately steep scrambles requiring careful footing. The summit is a favorite destination for sunrise and sunset views. Historically, the cinder cone was named locally after a reference to Edinburgh’s famous Arthur's Seat in Scotland, highlighting the hill’s distinctive profile. Visitors often combine their park visit with nearby seaside attractions and the scenic Myrtle Edwards Park. The combination of geological interest, natural habitats, and striking vistas makes Arthur's Seat State Park a unique urban outdoor destination. Wildlife such as hawks, songbirds, and occasional urban-adapted mammals can be observed here. The park is primarily day-use, with no developed campgrounds, and is maintained by Washington State Parks in partnership with the City of Seattle.
